History The
GKP Auckland Alumni was initiated
in 2003 followed in 2004 by
the GKP Wellington Alumni.
Goals
To provide continued
support and encouragement to students
who have participated in the Gifted
Kids Programme between when they leave
the programme in year 8 and when they
arrive at tertiary education.
To continue
to engage with Gifted Kids Alumni in
the short and long term and to build
a scene of community between all Alumni
who have participated in the programme.
To monitor achievement
of students and share their experiences
after GKP to be used as a reflection
on the GKP programme.
Membership:
The Gifted Kids
Alumni is open to any past pupil who
is year 9 or above in their education.
Activities
and Alliances The
GKP Alumni are kept in touch with
events via newsletters sent from their
previous Unit of general area and
are invited to one or two events each
year. These range from informal barbeques,
invitations to GKP Events, chess nights,
prize giving, or educational activities.
Both Auckland and Wellington GKP Alumni
have formed strong alliances with
their local University, Auckland University
and Victoria University. These Universities
are prepared to host eventsm co-ordinate
workshops and offer subject assistance
to students during their secondary
education.
We value all of our GKP students both
present and past and look forward
to sharing stories of success and
achievement with our Alumni, their
families, schools and communities.
Wellington
Alumni
The
GKP Wellington Alumni have met twice
this year, once socially to catch up
and share news and the second time in
a visit co-ordinated by Alice Boultbee
of Student Recruitment at Victoria University.
The
University trip involved 30 past Wainuiomata
and Rata pupils in the making of aspirin
in a chemistry lab and working through
design with a team from the architecture
and design department. This is the
3rd year Victoria has arranged this
visit and used student reps to discuss
options and issues around student
life in a tertiary institute.
The GKP
Alumni are open to past pupils in
Wellington and Auckland who have completed
at least one year at GKP and are now
in year 9 or above.
